LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Seniors Caitlin DeWitt and Litara Keil led the Lion attack to a .326 hitting percentage on Friday night, as LMU (1-0) opened the 2014 season with a sweep of LIU Brooklyn (0-1) in Gersten Pavilion as part of the 2014 Concourse Hotel at LAX Classic being hosted by the Lions this weekend. LMU defeated the Blackbirds by scores of 25-11, 25-16, 25-12, holding LIU Brooklyn to a .020 hitting percentage on the opposite side of the net.

DeWitt finished the match with 11 kills on 19 swings with two errors for a .474 hitting percentage. The native of Pleasanton, Calif. narrowly missed a double-double, teaming her 11 kills with nine digs and two aces.

The Lions posted 11 aces to only two service errors, led by four aces from junior setter Hannah Tedrow. Keil also got in on the serving game, tallying a pair of aces while posting nine kills on 20 errorless attacks for a .450 hitting percentage. The native of Long Beach, Calif. added two block solos to guide the Lions to six total team blocks.

One of LMU's biggest blocks came in the third set, and was only possible thanks to an outstanding dig and effort from libero Kristen Castellanos. The freshman from Los Angeles, Calif., who finished with 10 digs in her first match as a Lion, sprinted toward the far court and kept a ball alive with a one-handed dive, allowing the Lions to play the ball over where DeWitt slid out to her left and collected a solo block of Annika Foit for the point.

Perhaps overshadowed slightly by her senior teammates, junior Amber Mirabello turned in a stellar opening match for the Lions, hitting .444 with six kills, a block solo and a block assist.

The Lion attack, set by Tedrow with 29 assists, was clicking all night, as LMU hit a blistering .455 in the opening period before capping the match with a .360 clip in the third. On the other side, LMU held LIU Brooklyn to an even .000 clip in the first, a .103 mark in the second, and a -.074 clip in the final set.

The Concourse Hotel at LAX Classic continues on Saturday morning as UCLA and LIU Brooklyn meet at 11 a.m. The Lions return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m., hosting Binghamton. The Bruins swept the Bearcats in the opening match of the tournament.
