Metter Notches Career-Best Six Aces, Lions Sweep North Texas

Seniors Betsi Metter and Kathleen Luft had tremendous showings in LMU's first match of the year, a three-set sweep of North Texas to open the 2013 season as part of the DoubleTree Los Angeles Westside Invitational being hosted by the Lions over the weekend. Metter had a career-best six aces, tied for fourth-most by a Lion since at least 1995 for a single match and second most for a three-setter (Kathleen Bunce - seven on 9/4/93). The native of Phoenix, Ariz. tallied three of her six aces in consecutive fashion late in the first set, and now sits fourth all-time in LMU history with 122 aces. LMU (1-0) took the match over North Texas (0-1) by scores of 25-15, 25-22, 25-21.
Luft, a first team All-WCC selection last year, paced all players with 14 kills on 33 swings with only three errors for a solid .333 hitting percentage. The Lions hit .211 as a team, receiving 33 assists from sophomore setter Hannah Tedrow. Newcomer Ayana Whitaker had a breakout first appearance for the Lions, notching nine kills and hitting .375 to accompany a block solo and one block assist. With the contributions of Whitaker, the Lions posted five total team blocks, including three block assists from sophomore Rachelle Suaava. The native of Long Beach, Calif. added five kills in the victory.
Carnae Dillard led a North Texas offense that hit just .115 with 11 kills on 33 attacks.
In prior action from the DoubleTree Los Angeles Westside Invitational, UCLA (1-0) swept Albany (0-1). Matches continue tomorrow morning as UCLA and North Texas meet at 10 a.m. The Lions will then return to action against Albany at 12 p.m. After Albany and North Texas at 4:30 p.m., LMU will host the Bruins at 7 p.m. to conclude play.
