Sept. 26, 2013
After claiming the first two sets of a match at Gonzaga on Thursday, LMU (7-5, 2-1 WCC) was unable to close out the Bulldogs (5-7, 1-2 WCC), dropping a five-set match in The Kennel by scores of 19-25, 19-25, 26-24, 25-20, 17-15. The two teams battled throughout the match, playing to 48 tie scores and 19 lead changes over the course of the five sets.
Senior Kathleen Luft led all players with a season-high 24 kills, accompanied by 18 and 17 kills from Felicia Arriola and Litara Keil, respectively, but it was not enough for the Lions to claim the match. The Lions outhit the Bulldogs, .221 to .179, but the difference was in the first two sets as LMU hit .344 and .333, in that order. The Lions then hit .104, .250 and .111 en route to dropping the final three sets. LMU's all-time digs leader, Betsi Metter, once again led all players with 18 digs, while Arriola teamed her 18 kills with 11 digs for her first double-double of the year.
Savannah Blinn paced the Gonzaga attack, collecting 18 kills on 36 swings for a .361 hitting percentage. The Bulldog block proved to be a difference maker in the match, as Gonzaga posted 18 total team blocks, including a solo and nine block assists from Paige Folger.
LMU will look to get back on track on Saturday when it travels to Portland for a match at 1 p.m.
