Playing on the road at #17 San Diego (10-3, 3-0 WCC) on Tuesday night, LMU (7-6, 0-2 WCC) suffered a sweep by scores of 25-22, 25-22, 25-20 from the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The match was televised nationally on ESPNU and WatchESPN.
LMU continued to serve the ball well in the setback, collecting six aces, including three from sophomore setter Jessie Prichard. Prichard also dished out 20 assists as LMU hit .208 as a team. Sophomore Megan Rice collected 12 kills on 29 swings while also managing eight digs and two block assists.
With the six aces served to one ace allowed on Tuesday, LMU has now served up 79 aces to just 39 allowed.
“We are proud of how our team competed tonight,” first-year head coach Aaron Mansfield said. “San Diego is a good team and played a pretty smooth match. We had some easy opportunities that we weren't able to score on that could have helped us gain more momentum. We will continue to learn and get better from our experience tonight.”
The Lions out-blocked San Diego, 8.0-7.0, but the Toreros hit a strong .310 behind 13 kills from Jayden Kennedy. Kennedy, who also had a block solo and three block assists, finished the match hitting .321. Kaity Edwards also had a stellar day on the attack, hitting .500 with nine kills on 16 swings with just one error. Kristen Gengenbacher set the attack with 38 assists, while also registering seven digs in the victory.
LMU will have little time to dwell on the loss, returning home to host a pair of matches on Thursday and Saturday in WCC play. The Lions will welcome Saint Mary’s for a 7 p.m. match on Thursday before hosting Pacific at Noon on Saturday.
