Riding a three-match win streak in West Coast Conference play, LMU ran into a buzz saw on Saturday afternoon on the road at Gonzaga, as the Bulldogs (11-7, 6-0 WCC) posted a 25-20, 25-23, 25-21 sweep of the Lions (10-7, 3-3 WCC) from the Martin Centre.
Gonzaga hit .235 behind 10 kills from Sarah Penner, but it was the Gonzaga block that seemingly made the difference, as the Bulldogs totaled 12 team blocks, including three solos and four block assists from Payton Mack, to limit LMU to just .067 hitting on the other side of the net.
The Lions continued to serve the ball relatively well in the setback, collecting four aces, including a pair from the hand of Kekai Whitford. Emma Johnson was the lone Lion to reach double-digit kills, registering 10 on 19 swings for a .421 hitting percentage. Johnson also pitched in a block assist, but LMU managed just two total blocks.
LMU will look to get back on track when it hosts Santa Clara at 8 p.m. on Thursday from Gersten Pavilion. The match will air live on ESPNU, and will be third nationally-televised match of the year for the Lions.
