Finishing the 2017 season on the road at #7 BYU, LMU (16-13, 9-9 WCC) suffered a 25-19, 25-20, 25-16 sweep at the hands of the Cougars (28-2, 17-1 WCC) on Tuesday night in Provo, Utah. With the win, teamed with a San Diego victory at Pepperdine, BYU earned a share of the WCC Championship.

LMU hit just .109 in the setback, with Sara Kovac collecting nine kills on 26 swings. The Lions, the best serving team in the conference, served up two aces, with both coming from setter Tess Reid. Reid teamed the pair with 14 assists.

BYU kept the Lion hitting percentage at a low clip thanks in large part to 12 team blocks. Cosy Burnett finished with six blocks while hitting .462 with seven kills on 13 attacks. Veronica Jones-Perry and McKenna Miller each had 11 kills, and the Cougars hit .314 while receiving sets from Lyndie Haddock who dished out 27 assists.

Jones-Perry and the Cougars led the entire way in the first, as the senior registered five kills on 11 errorless attacks to lead BYU to a .379 hitting percentage. BYU also totaled five blocks in the first to limit LMU to just .162 hitting.

Five more Cougar blocks in the second kept the Lions at .091 hitting, as BYU once again never trailed en route to capturing a 2-0 lead in the match score.

LMU played BYU even to six in the third and final period, but the Cougars won three straight as part of a 10-4 run that saw them open up a 16-10 advantage. LMU, which hit .065 in the third, erred on an attack that allowed BYU to move the lead to 20-15 and forced a Lion timeout, and the Cougars won five of the final six points to capture the sweep and a share of the WCC Championship. Miller led the way for BYU in the third, posting four kills to help the home team to a .360 hitting percentage.
