COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
Former Lion, and 2009 LMU Hall of Fame inductee, Reid Priddy was named to his third U.S. Olympic Men's Volleyball Team, it was announced by USA Volleyball this week. Priddy and Team USA will represent the United States at the 2012 Olympic Games from July 29-Aug. 12 in London.
The U.S. Men, who train at the American Sports Centers in Anaheim, Calif., are the defending Olympic champions and ranked No. 6 in the world. Six players on the roster have previous Olympic experience, including Priddy and four others who competed on the 2008 gold-medal team.
While at LMU, Priddy earned American Volleyball Coaches Association first team All-America honors as a senior, and second team All-America honors as a sophomore and junior. He also garnered second team All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honors as a junior after leading the team in kills (435), kills per set (5.80) and service aces (35) that season. Priddy's All-American selection in 1998 was the first in school history, after leading the Lions with 391 kills and 17 matches with 10-or-more kills that year. He also earned All-MPSF Honorable Mention accolades for his efforts over his sophomore campaign.
In addition to Priddy, opposite Clay Stanley will also compete in his third Olympic Games. Stanley was named the most valuable player of the Beijing Olympic Games and is the current U.S. team captain. Both players were Olympic Games starters in Beijing and Athens (2004).
Also returning from the squad that competed in Beijing are libero Rich Lambourne, middle blocker David Lee and outside hitter Sean Rooney.
Setter Donald Suxho played on the 2004 U.S. Olympic Men's Volleyball Team that finished fourth in Athens, but he did not compete in Beijing.
Six players on the 2012 Olympic squad will be competing in their first Olympic Games: outside hitters Matt Anderson and Paul Lotman; middle blockers Russell Holmes and David Smith; setter Brian Thornton and opposite David McKienzie.
"It's a good group of veterans with Olympic experience and first-time Olympians who have been an integral part of our team." U.S. Olympic Men's Volleyball Team Head Coach Alan Knipe (Huntington Beach, Calif.) said.
Knipe is in his fourth season with the team and had a 52-27 record going in the 2012 season. In 2012, the U.S. Men have a record of 14-3, including winning the NORCECA Men's Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament and also winning their World League pool to advance to the Final Round. During the quad the U.S. Men have qualified for the World League Final Round three times.
"It was incredibly difficult to narrow our roster to 12 players. For a variety of reasons, we've played a lot of different guys in key tournaments during the quad and ended up with a very deep pool of talent."
Replacement athletes for the team are outside hitters Riley Salmon and Jayson Jablonsky, middle blockers Ryan Millar and Max Holt, setters Kevin Hansen and Jonathan Winder, and opposites Gabe Gardner and Evan Patak.
"When you're trying to create a team with clearly defined roles, you could end up with a couple different rosters and still be successful. The staff put a lot of time into this decision and it was a long and challenging process."
Assisting Knipe on the staff for the Olympic Games will be assistant coaches Gary Sato (Los Angeles, Calif.), Ron Larsen (Lafayette, Calif.) and John Speraw (Irvine, Calif.), along with team technical coordinator Chris Jackson (Phoenix, Ariz.) and USA Volleyball Director of Sport Medicine and Performance Aaron Brock (Storm Lake, Iowa).
Rob Browning (Newport Beach, Calif.) will serve as team leader.
The U.S. Men qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games by winning the NORCECA Men's Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament on May 7-12 in Long Beach, Calif.
The U.S. Men have qualified for nine previous Olympic Games: 1964, '68, '84, '88, '92, '96, 2000, '04 and '08. They have won the gold medal in 1984, '88 and 2008 and won bronze in 1992.
The U.S. Men will begin play in the London Olympic Games on July 29 against Serbia.
