The LMU volleyball program, which is looking for its second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2013, is tabbed to finish fifth in the WCC according to the 10 conference head coaches. Senior outside hitter Kathleen Luft also earned a spot on the Preseason All-West Coast Conference team.
The BYU women's volleyball team was chosen to win the 2013 West Coast Conference title. The Cougars, who will be without 2012 WCC Player of the Year Jennifer Hamson after Hamson elected to focus her attention solely on women's basketball this year, captured five of the nine possible first place votes and 74 points overall. Just one point shy of the Cougars, the University of San Diego tallied 73 points and three of the remaining first place votes. The Cougars and Toreros tied for first place in last year's regular season.
Saint Mary's College earned 69 points and two first place votes, while Pepperdine was picked fourth with 58 points. LMU earned 43 points and Santa Clara University tallied 42 points to finish fifth and sixth, respectively. Newcomer University of the Pacific earned 33 points to finish seventh, while the University of San Francisco (32 points), Gonzaga University (16 points) and the University of Portland (10 points) rounded out the preseason poll.
At least one player from eight of the 10 WCC teams is represented on the preseason All-WCC team, with the Gaels and Toreros having two players selected to the squad. Luft, the lone LMU representative on the preseason team, impressed in her first year for the Lions in 2012. The Thousand Oaks, Calif. native collected a WCC-best 474 kills at a rate of 4.16 per set. Guiding LMU to the NCAA Tournament down the stretch, Luft posted a career-best 25 kills in the final match of the regular season. The team leader with seven double-doubles, Luft was named September WCC Co-Player of the Month and took home WCC Player of the Week for the week of November 12. In WCC matches alone, Luft posted 254 kills at a rate of 4.31 per set.
The 2013 WCC season begins on Friday, August 30 with eight teams, including LMU, set for non-conference action. LMU's slate opens with a match against North Texas at 7 p.m. in Gersten Pavilion. Leading up to Opening Day, the West Coast Conference will host a Google+ Hangout previewing the 2013 WCC women's volleyball season. Fans will be able to ask questions of WCC student-athletes and watch the event live on YouTube.
