Keil Named Preseason All-WCC, Lions Picked Fifth

Senior Litara Keil was tabbed a preseason All-West Coast Conference selection, while the Lions were picked to finish fifth in the annual WCC Preseason Coaches Poll, it was announced on Monday morning.

Keil, an honorable mention All-WCC selection as a sophomore and junior, enters the 2014 season ranked third in LMU history in block assists (264), eighth in blocks per set (0.93), ninth in total blocks (300), and 142 kills short of entering the top-10 (958). Last season, she notched 354 kills at a rate of 3.50 per set while hitting .278. The kills mark was second-best on the squad, while her kills per set mark was eighth-best in the WCC. On the block, Keil posted four block solos and 73 block assists for a total of 77 blocks (0.76 blocks per set) to lead the team in all blocking categories. The native of Long Beach, Calif. reached double-digit kills in all but six matches last year.

After advancing to the 2013 NCAA Sweet-16, BYU was picked as the unanimous favorite to win the 2014 West Coast Conference Volleyball Championship. The top three teams were separated by 20 votes, with 11 points separating the Cougars from 2013 WCC champion San Diego in the annual poll of the WCC's 10 coaches.

BYU earned 81 points and all nine possible first place votes, while the Toreros collected 70 points with the remaining first place vote. San Diego also advanced to the 2013 NCAA Sweet-16. Saint Mary's earned 61 points for third place, while Pepperdine picked up 53 votes.



The fifth through eighth spots were separated by just five votes. LMU rounded out the top-five with 39 points, one spot in front of San Francisco in sixth place with 38 points. Pacific (36), Gonzaga (34), Santa Clara (28) and Portland (10) round out the survey.

The Lions will open the 2014 campaign on Friday when they host the Concourse Hotel at LAX Classic, featuring UCLA, Binghamton and LIU Brooklyn. The Lions host their first match at 7 pm against LIU Brooklyn.
