For the fourth straight year, LMU will host a tournament to open the season this weekend, welcoming UCLA, Binghamton and LIU Brooklyn to Gersten Pavilion for the 2014 Concourse Hotel at LAX Classic...every match during the tournament will be live-streamed free of charge at LMULions.com...
GET OFF ON THE RIGHT PAW
The Lions have had a knack for coming out of the gates strong in recent memory, having won 15 of their last 17 season-openers, including a sweep of North Texas to open the 2013 season...the only losses over that span came in 2007 to St. John's and then-No. 10 USC in 2010...LMU has recorded nine sweeps and won in four sets on five occasions...
Binghamton finished the 2013 season with a 9-19 overall record and a 7-7 mark in the America East Conference to place fifth...the Bearcats return 10 players from last year's squad, including Allison Hovie who averaged 2.62 kills per set and 1.89 digs per set last year...Amanda Dettmann also returns at the setter position after dishing out 972 assists at a rate of 9.26 per set to accompany a team-best 38 aces...Binghamton is led by 16th-year head coach Glenn Kiriyama...
UCLA, who is receiving votes in the preseason AVCA poll, finished 15-15 overall and 6-14 in the Pac-12, placing 10th in one of the best conferences in the nation...the Bruins have opened their season at a tournament hosted by LMU in three of the last four years, including last year as UCLA won the Four Points by Sheraton LA Westside Invitational...UCLA returns 11 players from a season ago, including senior Karsta Lowe who anchors the offense...Lowe was named an AVCA honorable mention All-American a year ago after averaging 4.31 kills per set...senior Megan Moenoa returns to the setter position this year after managing a team-high 9.21 assists per set in 2013...the Bruin block is also in good shape, as leading blocker Zoe Nightingale returns after posting 14 block solos and 97 block assists to average 1.09 blocks per set...
ABOUT LIU BROOKLYN
LIU Brooklyn reached the 2013 NCAA Tournament after posting a 23-8 overall record and a perfect 14-0 mark in the Northeast Conference, eventually falling to perennial powerhouse Penn State...the Blackbirds have now won 32 consecutive Northeast Conference matches, the longest active winning streak in conference play at the Division I level...LIU Brooklyn returns 11 players and nearly every starter from last year's talented squad...senior Annika Foit, the 2012 and 2013 NEC Player of the Year, and senior Vera Djuric (three-time NEC Setter of the Year) highlight the list of returners...Foit managed a team-best 384 kills at a rate of 4.17 per set last year, while Djuric dished out 1,060 assists (10.39 per set) while running the offense...also returning this season is two-time NEC Libero of the Year, junior Adriana Viñas Joy (460 digs | 4.38 per set)...LIU Brooklyn is led by seventh-year head coach, and three-time NEC Coach of the Year, Kyle Robinson...

One of Southern California's premier athletic facilities, Albert Gersten Pavilion is in its 33rd year as home of the Loyola Marymount volleyball in 2014...since opening night, the Pavilion has become one of toughest places to play in the West Coast Conference...the volleyball Lions first moved into the facility in 1982, and recorded 14 wins in Gersten's inaugural season...since 1982, the Lions have posted an overall record of 274-147 (.651) in the friendly confines of the Pavilion...in conference play, the record is even more impressive with a 139-66 (.678) home record in WCC action...in 32 years, the 1996 (WCC volleyball championship team and Sweet Sixteen participant) and 2003 (NCAA second round appearance) squads have been the most successful with 14-1 marks, for .933 winning percentages...
According to the 10 West Coast Conference head coaches, the LMU women's volleyball team is tabbed to finish fifth in the WCC this year...BYU, which opens the season with a #9 ranking according to the AVCA, was chosen to win the 2014 West Coast Conference title...defending WCC Champion, San Diego, is picked to finish second after opening the year with a #13 preseason ranking according to the AVCA...
PICKED BEFORE THE SERVE
Senior Litara Keil was tabbed a preseason All-West Coast Conference selection after taking home honorable mention All-WCC honors for the second consecutive season last year...as a junior in 2013, Keil notched 354 kills at a rate of 3.50 per set while hitting .278...the kills mark was second-best on the squad, while her kills per set mark was eighth-best in the WCC...on the block, Keil posted four block solos and 73 block assists for a total of 77 blocks (0.76 blocks per set) to lead the team in all blocking categories...the native of Long Beach, Calif. reached double-digit kills in all but six matches last year...
