Lions Travel to UTSA Classic for First Road Matches of Year
LMU volleyball will head to the UTSA Classic for matches on Thursday and Friday.

The 2013 UTSA Classic will see the Lions play three matches in two days, as the tournament kicks-off on Thursday...LMU will open play with a match against Texas A&M at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday before meeting host UTSA and Lamar at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., respectively on Friday...live stats and video can be found by clicking the tournament central link above...
LMU went 2-1 last week while hosting the DoubleTree Los Angeles Westside Invitational...the Lions swept North Texas and Albany in their first two matches of the year before falling in four sets to then-No. 12 UCLA in the Tournament Championship match...junior Ayana Whitaker led the Lions in kills with 26 while playing in all 10 sets...she also contributed two block solos and three block assists...seniors Kathleen Luft and Betsi Metter were named to the All-Tournament team following the conclusion of play...for more information on Luft and Metter, please see the "All-Tournament Selections" below...
LMU seniors Kathleen Luft and Betsi Metter earned All-Tournament honors at the conclusion of the DoubleTree Los Angeles Westside Invitational... Luft led the Lions in kills per set at 3.57, collecting 25 in seven sets played...Metter was outstanding from the service area throughout the tournament, posting a tournament-high 14 aces, including six in the season-opener against Albany...UCLA's Karsta Lowe was named Tournament MVP after log gin a tournament-best 52 kills at a rate of 5.20 per set...fellow Bruin, Kelly Reeves, also earned an All-Tournament nod...North Texas' Courtney Windham was the lone Mean Green selection, earning the distinction after leading all players in blocks...the senior had three block solos and nine block assists to average 1.33 blocks per set...Albany's Amanda Dolan took home All-Tournament honors for the Great Danes, posting 17 kills with only five errors on 49 swings for a .245 hitting percentage, good for eighth at the tournament...UCLA won the DoubleTree Los Angeles Westside Invitational with a 3-0 record, followed by LMU at 2-1, North Texas at 1-2 and Albany at 0-3...

Texas A&M opened the 2013 season going 2-1 and taking second place at the UND Classic in Grand Forks, N.D...the Aggies disposed of South Dakota State, 3-0, in the opener...A&M outhit the Jackrabbits, .363 to -.011, and tallied 14 aces, equaling the ninth most aces in a match in school history...A&M then faced 15th-ranked and former Big 12 foe Iowa State, and despite a 20-kill, .514 hitting performance from sophomore opposite hitter Sierra Patrick and nine blocks by freshman redshirt middle blocker Jazzmin Babers, the Aggies fell in four sets...A&M regrouped to defeat an experienced North Dakota team, 3-1, in the tournament finale as Patrick once again tallied a career-tying 20 kills...sophomore outside hitter Angela Lowak and sophomore middle blocker Shelby Sullivan also posted career highs in kills with 16 and 13, respectively...Patrick and senior setter Allie Sawatzky were named to the all-tournament team...
UTSA is coming off a 1-2 showing at last weekend's Tigers Classic in Baton Rouge, La...UTSA dropped four-set decisions to tournament host LSU and San Diego State before upending UC Davis in four stanzas in the finale...senior outside hitter McKenzie Adams averaged 6.25 kills, 4.00 digs and 6.46 points per set in the three matches and was named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week on Monday...
Lamar is coming off a narrow 3-2 loss to Texas-Pan American this past Monday and a 1-3 showing at the Texas State Classic, falling to Texas State, Houston and SMU before beating Quinnipiac in 3-1 fashion...Cortney Moore, who is coming off a Southland Freshman of the Year season in 2012, has led the team through the first five matches, hitting .288 and averaging 2.79 kills per set...despite playing limited minutes due to injury, All-Southland honoree Sierra Whittaker has been important in the attack too, averaging a team-best 3.00 kills per set...

The Lions have had a knack for coming out of the gates strong in recent memory, having won 15 of their last 17 season-openers, including a sweep of North Texas to open the 2013 season...the only losses over that span came in 2007 to St. John's and then-No. 10 USC in 2010...LMU has recorded nine sweeps and won in four sets on five occasions...

Senior Kathleen Luft was the lone Lion named to the 2013 WCC Preseason All-Conference team...Luft collected a WCC-best 474 kills at a rate of 4.16 per set last season en route to a first team All-WCC selection...in WCC matches alone, Luft posted 254 kills at a rate of 4.31 per set...

According to the 10 West Coast Conference head coaches, the LMU women's volleyball team is tabbed to finish fifth in the WCC this year...the BYU women's volleyball team, which opens the season with a #13 ranking according to the AVCA, was chosen to win the 2013 West Coast Conference title...

One of Southern California's premier athletic facilities, Albert Gersten Pavilion is in its 32nd year as home of the Loyola Marymount Lions...since opening night, the Pavilion has become one of toughest places to play in the West Coast Conference...the Lions first moved into the facility in 1982, and recorded 14 wins in Gersten's inaugural season...since 1982, the Lions have posted an overall record of 265-144 (.648) in the friendly confines of the Pavilion...in conference play, the record is even more impressive with a 132-64 (.673) home record in WCC action...in 31 years, the 1996 (WCC volleyball championship team and Sweet Sixteen participant) and 2003 (NCAA second round appearance) squads have been the most successful with 14-1 marks, for .933 winning percentages...
In addition to Kathleen Luft on the All-Conference first team last year, Betsi Metter and Litara Keil also received honorable mention selections...Metter allso claimed her second consecutive WCC Defensive Player of the Year honor...Hannah Tedrow rounded out the Lions lauded, earning a spot on the All-Freshman team...Metter finished the regular season ranked second in the WCC in digs (511 - 4.60 per set) and third in aces (39 - .35 per set)...Keil finished the regular season ranked seventh in the WCC in blocks (115 - 1.04 per set) and 10th in attack percentage (.314), aces (34 - .31 per set) and kills (347 - 3.13 per set)...Tedrow finished the year ranked sixth in the WCC in assists with 1,045 at a rate of 9.41 per set...

After completing his third year serving as LMU head volleyball coach last season, Tom Black accepted an assistant coach position under head coach Karch Kiraly with the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team...Black will continue in his head coach role at LMU while serving on the Team USA staff for the first two years of the Olympic quadrennial before taking a sabbatical at LMU for the 2015 season...Black spent last the last three summers as a consultant coach for the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team as the squad prepared for the 2012 London Games...
