Lions Conclude 2011 with Loss at No. 23 Long Beach State
LMU (14-16) finished the 2011 season with a three-set loss to No. 23 Long Beach State (21-6) on Wednesday night in Long Beach State's Walter Pyramid by scores of 25-21, 25-17, 25-22. The victory extended Long Beach State's winning streak to 13 matches.

LION TRACKS
LMU hit the road for the first time this year last weekend, traveling to San Antonio, Texas for the UTSA Classic...the Lions went 1-2 at the tournament, taking four-set losses to Texas A&M and host UTSA before sweeping Lamar to close tournament play...junior Litara Keil and sophomore Hannah Tedrow each earned a spot on the All-Tournament team...for more information on their stellar weeks, please see the "Texas Twosome" section below...

TEXAS TWOSOME
A pair of Lions earned All-Tournament honors at the conclusion of the UTSA Classic, as junior Litara Keil and sophomore Hannah Tedrow each were lauded...Keil collected 38 kills in just two matches played at the tournament, averaging 4.75 kills per set...the native of Long Beach, Calif. had 18 kills on 45 swings for a .289 hitting percentage against Texas A&M before notching 20 more on 42 swings (.333) against host UTSA...she hit .310 over the course of the two matches...Tedrow dished-out 117 assists in three matches played, averaging 11.70 assists per set...active on the attack in her own right, she collected eight kills on 16 attacks...the native of Foothill Ranch, Calif. also managed a block solo and three block assists...for Tedrow, the All-Tournament selection was the first of her career, while Keil has earned one All-Tournament selection in each of her first three years at LMU.

NINER NOTES
Long Beach State enters the week sporting a 2-4 overall record having most recently dropped a five-set match to Miami on September 7...the 49ers have lost four of their last five matches, but two of those four have come at the hands of ranked opponents (#18 Florida State in five sets and a sweep at the hands of #17 Kentucky)...the lone victory over the span came against the WCC's San Francisco in five sets on September 6...Delainey Aigner-Swesey is the team's leading attacker, collecting 97 kills at a rate of 3.59 per set...Long Beach State is solid on the block, notching 68.5 total team blocks, including two solos and 29 assists from Chisom Okpala...Okpala is hitting .345 on the attack, collecting 52 kills on 113 swings...Long Beach State is led by 29th-year head coach Brian Gimmillaro...

REDHAWK RANTS
Seattle University enters the weekend sporting a 2-7 overall record, having dropped six straight matches, including a pair to top-20 opponents...the Redhawks most recently suffered a sweep at the hands of #20 Oregon on Tuesday...Seattle University has not played more than three sets in a match this year, sweeping Texas Tech and UC Riverside while being swept by seven opponents, including Gonzaga of the WCC...Martina Samadan and Iris Ivanis lead the offense for Seattle, with Ivanis posting a team-best 68 kills and Samadan averaging 4.17 kills per set...Ivanis also leads the team in service aces with seven...the Redhawks have accumulated 55 total team blocks, led by Allison Farley (2 block solos and 21 block assists) and Alec Goodrie (5 block solos and 17 block assists)...Seattle is led by first-year head coach James Finley...

COUGAR CHATTER
The College of Charleston is off to a great start in 2013, playing to a perfect 7-0 record that includes their most recent victory over Indiana on September 7...the Cougars are led by Darcy Dorton on the attack, collecting 79 kills at a rate of 3.59 per set...Dorton is hitting .300 on the year...Kallie McKown and Taeler Davis have set the offense to a .294 hitting percentage, with McKown posting two more assists than Davis at 120...Kari Fidelholtz guides the team to 43 aces, notching 10 on her own...College of Charleston is led by seventh-year head coach Jason Kepner...

WELLS FARGO PCH CUP
Separated by 19.1 miles of scenic coastline, longtime cross-town adversaries Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine have come together in an effort to boost their decades-long rivalry with the creation of the Wells Fargo Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) Cup...the series, which is in its fifth year, serves as an annual scorecard for the NCAA-sponsored athletic contests between the Lions and Waves, and challenges each institution to rise above the other within the West Coast Conference...any head-to-head competition, including matches in the post-season and tournaments throughout the year, will be counted toward the scoring and added to the scorecard as they occur...for the sports in which the two teams do not meet head-to-head, the teams will battle for points that will be awarded on the basis of overall finish at their respective post-season championships...the first meeting between the two teams is set for this Saturday when the Lions host the Waves in men's water polo...Pepperdine has won the challenge in each of the first four seasons...to learn more about the PCH Challenge and view the current scorecard, please visit: http://tinyurl.com/6n4l82s

DOUBLETREE ALL-TOURNEY
LMU seniors Kathleen Luft and Betsi Metter earned All-Tournament honors at the conclusion of the DoubleTree Los Angeles Westside Invitational... Luft led the Lions in kills per set at 3.57, collecting 25 in seven sets played...Metter was outstanding from the service area throughout the tournament, posting a tournament-high 14 aces, including six in the season-opener against Albany...UCLA's Karsta Lowe was named Tournament MVP after log gin a tournament-best 52 kills at a rate of 5.20 per set...fellow Bruin, Kelly Reeves, also earned an All-Tournament nod...North Texas' Courtney Windham was the lone Mean Green selection, earning the distinction after leading all players in blocks...the senior had three block solos and nine block assists to average 1.33 blocks per set...Albany's Amanda Dolan took home All-Tournament honors for the Great Danes, posting 17 kills with only five errors on 49 swings for a .245 hitting percentage, good for eighth at the tournament...UCLA won the DoubleTree Los Angeles Westside Invitational with a 3-0 record, followed by LMU at 2-1, North Texas at 1-2 and Albany at 0-3...

GET OFF ON THE RIGHT PAW
The Lions have had a knack for coming out of the gates strong in recent memory, having won 15 of their last 17 season-openers, including a sweep of North Texas to open the 2013 season...the only losses over that span came in 2007 to St. John's and then-No. 10 USC in 2010...LMU has recorded nine sweeps and won in four sets on five occasions...

PICKED BEFORE THE SERVE
Senior Kathleen Luft was the lone Lion named to the 2013 WCC Preseason All-Conference team...Luft collected a WCC-best 474 kills at a rate of 4.16 per set last season en route to a first team All-WCC selection...in WCC matches alone, Luft posted 254 kills at a rate of 4.31 per set...

THE SURVEY SAYS
According to the 10 West Coast Conference head coaches, the LMU women's volleyball team is tabbed to finish fifth in the WCC this year...the BYU women's volleyball team, which opens the season with a #13 ranking according to the AVCA, was chosen to win the 2013 West Coast Conference title...

HOME SWEET HOME
One of Southern California's premier athletic facilities, Albert Gersten Pavilion is in its 32nd year as home of the Loyola Marymount Lions...since opening night, the Pavilion has become one of toughest places to play in the West Coast Conference...the Lions first moved into the facility in 1982, and recorded 14 wins in Gersten's inaugural season...since 1982, the Lions have posted an overall record of 265-144 (.648) in the friendly confines of the Pavilion...in conference play, the record is even more impressive with a 132-64 (.673) home record in WCC action...in 31 years, the 1996 (WCC volleyball championship team and Sweet Sixteen participant) and 2003 (NCAA second round appearance) squads have been the most successful with 14-1 marks, for .933 winning percentages...

ALL-CONFERENCE RETURNERS
In addition to Kathleen Luft on the All-Conference first team last year, Betsi Metter and Litara Keil also received honorable mention selections...Metter allso claimed her second consecutive WCC Defensive Player of the Year honor...Hannah Tedrow rounded out the Lions lauded, earning a spot on the All-Freshman team...Metter finished the regular season ranked second in the WCC in digs (511 - 4.60 per set) and third in aces (39 - .35 per set)...Keil finished the regular season ranked seventh in the WCC in blocks (115 - 1.04 per set) and 10th in attack percentage (.314), aces (34 - .31 per set) and kills (347 - 3.13 per set)...Tedrow finished the year ranked sixth in the WCC in assists with 1,045 at a rate of 9.41 per set...

U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A
After completing his third year serving as LMU head volleyball coach last season, Tom Black accepted an assistant coach position under head coach Karch Kiraly with the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team...Black will continue in his head coach role at LMU while serving on the Team USA staff for the first two years of the Olympic quadrennial before taking a sabbatical at LMU for the 2015 season...Black spent last the last three summers as a consultant coach for the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team as the squad prepared for the 2012 London Games...
