Lions Sweep Past Gonzaga
The LMU volleyball team (14-10, 5-6 WCC) earned a sweep of the season series with Gonzaga (9-15, 1-10 WCC) by way of a 25-13, 25-13, 25-12 victory on Saturday afternoon in Gersten Pavilion. LMU held the Bulldogs to a -.090 hitting percentage while connecting at a .297 clip of its own. LMU never trailed in the match en route to the sweep.

Lions Hit .355 in Sweep of Portland
The dynamic duo of junior Kathleen Luft and sophomore Litara Keil was at it again on Thursday night, with each player hitting above .500 and 13 kills apiece as LMU (15-10, 6-6 WCC) swept Portland (6-20, 0-12 WCC) by scores of 25-22, 25-20, 25-14 in Gersten Pavilion. The Lions hit .355 as a team behind setter Hannah Tedrow's 39 assists.

The LMU volleyball team (7-4, 2-0 WCC) will hit the road this week for just the second time this year, traveling to Gonzaga (4-7, 0-2 WCC) and Portland (0-11, 0-2 WCC) for a pair of West Coast Conference matches...LMU will face the Bulldogs on Thursday at 7 p.m. before meeting the Pilots at 1 p.m. on Saturday...

LUFT LIFTS LIONS
Senior Kathleen Luft was named WCC Player of the Week on September 23 after guiding LMU to a 2-0 week, including victories over San Francisco and Santa Clara, to start West Coast Conference play...the selection is the second of her career after being honored on November 12 of last year...the native of Thousand Oaks, Calif. collected 35 kills over the two matches (4.38 per set) while hitting .380...she also posted a pair of aces in the match against Santa Clara, including one to force match point in the five-set victory over the Broncos...she then collected the match-winner as part of her season-high 23 kill performance on Saturday...Luft collected 12 kills with just two errors on 25 swings (.400) in a sweep of San Francisco before notching the 23 kills with just three errors on 54 attacks (.370) against Santa Clara...she finished the week with eight total blocks, including three block assists against San Francisco and five more against the Broncos...following her selection, Luft was interviewed by the WCC on TheW.tv...to view that interview, please visit: http://bit.ly/180R5lJ
LMU went 2-0 last week to start West Coast Conference play, sweeping San Francisco before recording a five-set victory over Santa Clara...LMU hit a stellar .356, served up six aces and recorded eight team blocks in the win over San Francisco...senior Felicia Arriola had a tremendous match for the Lions, notching a match and season-best 14 kills on 25 swings for a .480 hitting percentage. Senior Kathleen Luft also hit for a high clip, posting 12 kills with just two errors on 25 swings for a .400 mark. The duo was joined by junior Litara Keil with 12 kills on 19 attacks for a .526 clip...LMU was quick to take a lead in each of the five sets played on Saturday against Santa Clara, eventually outlasting the Broncos in the first five-set match of the year for the Lions...Luft led the way for the Lions, collecting a match and season-best 23 kills on 54 swings with only two errors for a .370 clip...Arriola and Keil each pitched in 14 kills, with Keil hitting .385 and posting nine block assists to guide LMU to a season-best 14 total team blocks...the nine block assists matched a career-high for Keil, having reached that mark twice earlier in her career...
Gonzaga enters the week sporting a 4-7 record and a 0-2 mark in the WCC after dropping matches to Pacific and Saint Mary's last week...Savannah Blinn leads the Bulldog attack, collecting 161 kills at a rate of 3.93 per set...Blinn is also hitting a team-best .353 whiel serving-up six of Gonzaga's 51 aces...a trio of players have 100+ assists for Gonzaga, led by Lauren Joseph at 218...the Bulldogs have accumulated 110 total team blocks, led by Paige Folger with a block solo and 52 block assists...Gonzaga is led by fifth-year head coach Dave Gantt...
Portland enters the week sporting a 0-11 record and a 0-2 mark in the WCC...the Pilots most recently suffered sweeps at the hands of Saint Mary's and Pacific last week...Portland has dropped the last four matches by way of sweep...Autumn Wedan leads the attack with 184 kills at a rate of 4.84 per set...Monica Jordan sets the offense with 382 assists, while Wedan also leads the team in aces with six...Makayla Lindburg and Brittney Markwith are the team's leading blockers, notching 21 and 20 blocks, respectively...Portland is led by sixth-year head coach Joe Houck...
WELLS FARGO PCH CUP
Separated by 19.1 miles of scenic coastline, longtime cross-town adversaries Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine have come together in an effort to boost their decades-long rivalry with the creation of the Wells Fargo Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) Cup...the series, which is in its fifth year, serves as an annual scorecard for the NCAA-sponsored athletic contests between the Lions and Waves, and challenges each institution to rise above the other within the West Coast Conference...any head-to-head competition, including matches in the post-season and tournaments throughout the year, will be counted toward the scoring and added to the scorecard as they occur...for the sports in which the two teams do not meet head-to-head, the teams will battle for points that will be awarded on the basis of overall finish at their respective post-season championships...the Lions currently lead the Waves this year, 1-0...Pepperdine has won the challenge in each of the first four seasons...to learn more about the PCH Cup and view the current scorecard, please visit: http://tinyurl.com/6n4l82s
HOME SWEET HOME
One of Southern California's premier athletic facilities, Albert Gersten Pavilion is in its 32nd year as home of the Loyola Marymount Lions...since opening night, the Pavilion has become one of toughest places to play in the West Coast Conference...the Lions first moved into the facility in 1982, and recorded 14 wins in Gersten's inaugural season...since 1982, the Lions have posted an overall record of 269-145 (.650) in the friendly confines of the Pavilion...in conference play, the record is even more impressive with a 134-64 (.677) home record in WCC action...in 31 years, the 1996 (WCC volleyball championship team and Sweet Sixteen participant) and 2003 (NCAA second round appearance) squads have been the most successful with 14-1 marks, for .933 winning percentages...

A pair of Lions earned All-Tournament honors at the conclusion of the UTSA Classic, as junior Litara Keil and sophomore Hannah Tedrow each were lauded...Keil collected 38 kills in just two matches played at the tournament, averaging 4.75 kills per set...the native of Long Beach, Calif. had 18 kills on 45 swings for a .289 hitting percentage against Texas A&M before notching 20 more on 42 swings (.333) against host UTSA...she hit .310 over the course of the two matches...Tedrow dished-out 117 assists in three matches played, averaging 11.70 assists per set...active on the attack in her own right, she collected eight kills on 16 attacks...the native of Foothill Ranch, Calif. also managed a block solo and three block assists...for Tedrow, the All-Tournament selection was the first of her career, while Keil has earned one All-Tournament selection in each of her first three years at LMU...
LMU seniors Kathleen Luft and Betsi Metter earned All-Tournament honors at the conclusion of the DoubleTree Los Angeles Westside Invitational... Luft led the Lions in kills per set at 3.57, collecting 25 in seven sets played...Metter was outstanding from the service area throughout the tournament, posting a tournament-high 14 aces, including six in the season-opener against Albany...UCLA's Karsta Lowe was named Tournament MVP after log gin a tournament-best 52 kills at a rate of 5.20 per set...fellow Bruin, Kelly Reeves, also earned an All-Tournament nod...North Texas' Courtney Windham was the lone Mean Green selection, earning the distinction after leading all players in blocks...the senior had three block solos and nine block assists to average 1.33 blocks per set...Albany's Amanda Dolan took home All-Tournament honors for the Great Danes, posting 17 kills with only five errors on 49 swings for a .245 hitting percentage, good for eighth at the tournament...UCLA won the DoubleTree Los Angeles Westside Invitational with a 3-0 record, followed by LMU at 2-1, North Texas at 1-2 and Albany at 0-3...
GET OFF ON THE RIGHT PAW
The Lions have had a knack for coming out of the gates strong in recent memory, having won 15 of their last 17 season-openers, including a sweep of North Texas to open the 2013 season...the only losses over that span came in 2007 to St. John's and then-No. 10 USC in 2010...LMU has recorded nine sweeps and won in four sets on five occasions...
PICKED BEFORE THE SERVE
Senior Kathleen Luft was the lone Lion named to the 2013 WCC Preseason All-Conference team...Luft collected a WCC-best 474 kills at a rate of 4.16 per set last season en route to a first team All-WCC selection...in WCC matches alone, Luft posted 254 kills at a rate of 4.31 per set...
THE SURVEY SAYS
According to the 10 West Coast Conference head coaches, the LMU women's volleyball team is tabbed to finish fifth in the WCC this year...the BYU women's volleyball team, which opened the season with a #13 ranking according to the AVCA, was chosen to win the 2013 West Coast Conference title...
In addition to Kathleen Luft on the All-Conference first team last year, Betsi Metter and Litara Keil also received honorable mention selections...Metter allso claimed her second consecutive WCC Defensive Player of the Year honor...Hannah Tedrow rounded out the Lions lauded, earning a spot on the All-Freshman team...Metter finished the regular season ranked second in the WCC in digs (511 - 4.60 per set) and third in aces (39 - .35 per set)...Keil finished the regular season ranked seventh in the WCC in blocks (115 - 1.04 per set) and 10th in attack percentage (.314), aces (34 - .31 per set) and kills (347 - 3.13 per set)...Tedrow finished the year ranked sixth in the WCC in assists with 1,045 at a rate of 9.41 per set...
U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A
After completing his third year serving as LMU head volleyball coach last season, Tom Black accepted an assistant coach position under head coach Karch Kiraly with the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team...Black will continue in his head coach role at LMU while serving on the Team USA staff for the first two years of the Olympic quadrennial before taking a sabbatical at LMU for the 2015 season...Black spent last the last three summers as a consultant coach for the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team as the squad prepared for the 2012 London Games...
