No. 13 San Diego Hands LMU First Road Loss
The LMU volleyball team (11-9, 2-5 WCC) suffered its first road loss on Saturday afternoon, dropping a decision to No. 13 San Diego (16-2, 8-0 WCC) by scores of 25-17, 25-12, 25-22. The Lions are now 3-1 on the road this year.

Lions Swept by No. 17 BYU
The LMU women's volleyball team (15-11, 6-7 WCC) played a pair of hard-fought sets early on Saturday afternoon, but had things unravel in the third en route to being swept by No. 17 BYU (23-2, 11-2 WCC) by scores of 26-24, 28-26, 25-13. The previous four matches between the two teams went to five sets, with LMU dropping all four.

The LMU volleyball team (8-5, 3-1 WCC) will split a pair of matches on the road and home this week, traveling to #13 San Diego (9-3, 1-2 WCC) and hosting BYU (10-3, 3-0 WCC) for a pair of West Coast Conference matches...LMU will face the ranked Toreros on Thursday at 7 p.m. before welcoming the Cougars to Gersten at 12 p.m. on Saturday...

LMU split a pair of matches in the northwest last week in West Coast Conference play, dropping a heartbreaking five-set match at Gonzaga before recording a sweep over Portland on the road...after claiming the first two sets at Gonzaga, LMU was unable to close out the Bulldogs...the two teams battled throughout the match, playing to 48 tie scores and 19 lead changes over the course of the five sets...senior Kathleen Luft led all players with a season-high 24 kills, accompanied by 18 and 17 kills from Felicia Arriola and Litara Keil, respectively, but it was not enough for the Lions to claim the match...Arriola teamed her 18 kills with 11 digs for her first double-double of the year...the LMU volleyball program then recorded a 25-23, 25-16, 25-22 sweep of Portland...the Lions hit a solid .363 as a team, led by 14 kills on 27 swings with only two errors from Luft...the Lions also received solid play from Keil and Arriola...both players notched 13 kills and hit .476, with Keil also managing two block assists...

No. 13 San Diego enters the week sporting a 9-3 record and a 1-2 mark in the WCC after splitting a pair of home matches last week...the Toreros, who reached as high as No. 2 in the nation this year, swept Pacific on Thursday before dropping a five-set match against Saint Mary's on Saturday...the Toreros have defeated twice played the top-ranked team in the nation, falling in five to Texas on August 31 before defeating USC in four sets on September 13...Chloe Ferrari and Katie Hoekman pace the attack for USD, posting .422 and .403 hitting percentages...Ferrari has managed 122 kills while Hoekman has collected 131...the Toreros are hitting .253 as a team...Jianna Bonomi sets the offense to the solid clip, dishing out 332 assists at a rate of 7.22 per set...Ferrari is also a force on the block, notching five solos and 37 assists for 42 total blocks, guiding USD to 84 total team blocks (1.83 per set)...San Diego is led by 13th-year head coach Jennifer Petrie...

One of Southern California's premier athletic facilities, Albert Gersten Pavilion is in its 32nd year as home of the Loyola Marymount Lions...since opening night, the Pavilion has become one of toughest places to play in the West Coast Conference...the Lions first moved into the facility in 1982, and recorded 14 wins in Gersten's inaugural season...since 1982, the Lions have posted an overall record of 269-145 (.650) in the friendly confines of the conference play, the record is even more impressive with a 134-64 (.677) home record in WCC 31 years, the 1996 (WCC volleyball championship team and Sweet Sixteen participant) and 2003 (NCAA second round appearance) squads have been the most successful with 14-1 marks, for .933 winning percentages...

A pair of Lions earned All-Tournament honors at the conclusion of the UTSA Classic, as junior Litara Keil and sophomore Hannah Tedrow each were lauded...Keil collected 38 kills in just two matches played at the tournament, averaging 4.75 kills per set...the native of Long Beach, Calif. had 18 kills on 45 swings for a .289 hitting percentage against Texas A&M before notching 20 more on 42 swings (.333) against host UTSA...she hit .310 over the course of the two matches...Tedrow dished-out 117 assists in three matches played, averaging 11.70 assists per on the attack in her own right, she collected eight kills on 16 attacks...the native of Foothill Ranch, Calif. also managed a block solo and three block assists...for Tedrow, the All-Tournament selection was the first of her career, while Keil has earned one All-Tournament selection in each of her first three years at LMU...

LMU seniors Kathleen Luft and Betsi Metter earned All-Tournament honors at the conclusion of the DoubleTree Los Angeles Westside Invitational... Luft led the Lions in kills per set at 3.57, collecting 25 in seven sets played...Metter was outstanding from the service area throughout the tournament, posting a tournament-high 14 aces, including six in the season-opener against Albany...UCLA's Karsta Lowe was named Tournament MVP after log gin a tournament-best 52 kills at a rate of 5.20 per set...fellow Bruin, Kelly Reeves, also earned an All-Tournament nod...North Texas' Courtney Windham was the lone Mean Green selection, earning the distinction after leading all players in blocks...the senior had three block solos and nine block assists to average 1.33 blocks per set...Albany's Amanda Dolan took home All-Tournament honors for the Great Danes, posting 17 kills with only five errors on 49 swings for a .245 hitting percentage, good for eighth at the tournament...UCLA won the DoubleTree Los Angeles Westside Invitational with a 3-0 record, followed by LMU at 2-1, North Texas at 1-2 and Albany at 0-3...

The Lions have had a knack for coming out of the gates strong in recent memory, having won 15 of their last 17 season-openers, including a sweep of North Texas to open the 2013 season...the only losses over that span came in 2007 to St. John's and then-No. 10 USC in 2010...LMU has recorded nine sweeps and won in four sets on five occasions...

Senior Kathleen Luft was the lone Lion named to the 2013 WCC Preseason All-Conference team...Luft collected a WCC-best 474 kills at a rate of 4.16 per set last season en route to a first team All-WCC WCC matches alone, Luft posted 254 kills at a rate of 4.31 per set...

According to the 10 West Coast Conference head coaches, the LMU women's volleyball team is tabbed to finish fifth in the WCC this year...the BYU women's volleyball team, which opened the season with a #13 ranking according to the AVCA, was chosen to win the 2013 West Coast Conference title...

In addition to Kathleen Luft on the All-Conference first team last year, Betsi Metter and Litara Keil also received honorable mention selections...Metter allso claimed her second consecutive WCC Defensive Player of the Year honor...Hannah Tedrow rounded out the Lions lauded, earning a spot on the All-Freshman team...Metter finished the regular season ranked second in the WCC in digs (511 - 4.60 per set) and third in aces (39 - .35 per set)...Keil finished the regular season ranked seventh in the WCC in blocks (115 - 1.04 per set) and 10th in attack percentage (.314), aces (34 - .31 per set) and kills (347 - 3.13 per set)...Tedrow finished the year ranked sixth in the WCC in assists with 1,045 at a rate of 9.41 per set...

After completing his third year serving as LMU head volleyball coach last season, Tom Black accepted an assistant coach position under head coach Karch Kiraly with the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team...Black will continue in his head coach role at LMU while serving on the Team USA staff for the first two years of the Olympic quadrennial before taking a sabbatical at LMU for the 2015 season...Black spent last the last three summers as a consultant coach for the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team as the squad prepared for the 2012 London Games...
