Oct. 13, 2003
Colorado Springs, Colo. -- After playing to a 17-3, 2-1 WCC record, including a 3-1 win over No. 7 UC Santa Barbara on September 2nd and a current home streak of 10-0, Loyola Marymount volleyball ranks 19th on today's USA Today/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 poll.
The Lions peaked at the No. 20 spot last week. This week's 421 points, however, are good for the 19th spot, LMU's highest ranking this season. In addition to defeating the No. 7 Gauchos, LMU has claimed three tournament titles this season: the Furama Hotel Invitational, the Sheraton Four Points Classic, and the Cougar Mania Tournament.
LMU opened conference play by hosting Saint Mary's on Friday, October 3rd and then-No. 24 San Francisco on Saturday, October 4th. The Lions took both matches to extend their winning streak to six consecutive matches and protect their home record at 10-0 in Gersten Pavilion.
Last weekend, the Lions traveled to No. 6 Pepperdine and forced a four-game match with the Waves before dropping 3-1.
The September 29th poll marked the first time in West Coast Conference history that five WCC teams were ranked in the top 25. The WCC tied the Pac-10 with five teams ranked in the top 25. No other conference had more than three of its teams ranked.
This week, Pepperdine (13-2, 3-0 WCC) and Santa Clara (12-6, 3-0 WCC) retained their sixth and 14th spots, respectively. San Diego (13-4, 2-1 WCC) moved up one spot to No. 17. San Francisco (17-2, 2-2 WCC) entered the poll for the first time in program history on September 29th at 24th, but dropped out of the top 25 after losing their first two matches of the season to No. 6 Pepperdine and LMU to open WCC competition. The Lions face each of these WCC teams twice.
In addition to UCSB, another opponent from the 2003 schedule is included in the top 25. LMU dropped a match to No. 2 Hawaii (17-1) on September 19.
No. 19 LMU will continue its three-match road trip as they travel north next weekend to face Portland on Friday and Gonzaga on Saturday. Both matches are slated for 7:00 p.m. start times.
