Lions Record Sweep of Portland
The LMU volleyball program (8-5, 3-1 WCC) recorded a 25-23, 25-16, 25-22 sweep of Portland (0-13, 0-4 WCC) on Saturday on the road in West Coast Conference play. The Lions hit a solid .363 as a team, led by 14 kills on 27 swings with only two errors from senior Kathleen Luft (.444).

Lions Can't Escape The Kennel, Drop Five-Setter at Gonzaga
After claiming the first two sets of a match at Gonzaga on Thursday, LMU (7-5, 2-1 WCC) was unable to close out the Bulldogs (5-7, 1-2 WCC), dropping a five-set match in The Kennel by scores of 19-25, 19-25, 26-24, 25-20, 17-15. The two teams battled throughout the match, playing to 48 tie scores and 19 lead changes over the course of the five sets.

THIS WEEK
The LMU volleyball team (9-9, 4-5 WCC) will being the second half of West Coast Conference play this week, hosting Portland (0-18, 0-9 WCC) and Gonzaga (8-10, 4-5 WCC) in Gersten Pavilion...the Lions swept Portland and lost in five sets to Gonzaga earlier this year...LMU will meet the Pilots on Thursday at 7 pm before welcoming Gonzaga to campus on Saturday at Noon...

A METTER ABOVE THE REST
Senior Betsi Metter has had a tremendous final season as a Lion thus far, setting the all-time LMU digs record on September 13 vs. Seattle University and the all-time career aces record on October 9 at Saint Mary's...Metter currently owns 1,627 digs and 161 aces in her career, passing Deanna Doolittle (1,440 digs from 1990-93) and Heather Hughes (158 aces from 2004-07) for those records...her .40 aces per set rank second only to Lori Rodman (.45 from 1984-87) in the LMU record, while her 4.03 digs per set are second only to Kerry House (4.89 from 1989-90)...Metter's 0.66 aces per set would rank second in the single-season record book, but she needs to appear in at least 70 sets to qualify...

Fans looking to attend a Lion home volleyball match this year can do so free of charge...every home volleyball match is open to the public, just come in, take a seat and cheer for the Lions...other LMU Athletic events free to the public in 2013-14 include men's and women's water polo, men's and women's tennis, softball and women's swimming...

LION TRACKS
In its only match of the week, the LMU volleyball team swept Pepperdine by scores of 25-19, 25-23, 25-19 on Thursday night to claim a point in the PCH Cup standings, pushing LMU to a 2-0 lead over the Waves in the annual scorecard between the two schools...seniors Felicia Arriola and Kathleen Luft led the Lion attack, collecting 15 kills apiece in the victory...Luft hit a solid .379 with the 15 kills on 29 attacks with only four errors, guiding LMU to a .248 match hitting percentage...Hannah Tedrow set the attack on Thursday, dishing-out 42 assists and narrowly missing a double-double with nine digs...senior Betsi Metter once again led all players in digs, posting 15, while LMU served up six aces, including a pair each from Litara Keil and Tedrow.

PORTLAND POINTS
Portland enters the week sporting a 0-18 record and a 0-9 mark in the WCC...the Pilots most recently suffered losses to BYU and San Diego last week...Portland fell in five sets to Gonzaga on October 12 before taking a set against then-No. 11 San Diego last Saturday...Autumn Wedan leads the attack with 294 kills at a rate of 4.52 per set...Monica Jordan sets the offense with 638 assists, while Makayla Lindburg leads the team in aces with 12...Brittney Markwith is the team's leading blocker, notching 39 blocks...Portland is led by sixth-year head coach Joe Houck...

BULLDOG BANTER
Gonzaga enters the week sporting a 8-10 record and a 4-5 mark in the WCC after dropping matches to San Diego and BYU last week...Savannah Blinn leads the Bulldog attack, collecting 273 kills at a rate of 3.90 per set...Blinn is also hitting a team-best .316 while serving-up eight of Gonzaga's 87 aces...Kathleen Wright (19) and Kristina Lavrisha (15) lead the team in aces...a pair of players have 200+ assists for Gonzaga, namely Lauren Joseph at 344 and Lyndsay Palmer at 248...the Bulldogs have accumulated 182.5 total team blocks, led by Paige Folger with two block solos and 62 block assists and Imani Wimbush with two solos and 61 block assists...Gonzaga is led by fifth-year head coach Dave Gantt...

HOME SWEET HOME
One of Southern California's premier athletic facilities, Albert Gersten Pavilion is in its 32nd year as home of the Loyola Marymount Lions...since opening night, the Pavilion has become one of toughest places to play in the West Coast Conference...the Lions first moved into the facility in 1982, and recorded 14 wins in Gersten's inaugural season...since 1982, the Lions have posted an overall record of 270-146 (.649) in the friendly confines of the Pavilion...in conference play, the record is even more impressive with a 135-65 (.675) home record in WCC action...in 31 years, the 1996 (WCC volleyball championship team and Sweet Sixteen participant) and 2003 (NCAA second round appearance) squads have been the most successful with 14-1 marks, for .933 winning percentages...

WELLS FARGO PCH CUP
Separated by 19.1 miles of scenic coastline, longtime cross-town adversaries Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine have come together in an effort to boost their decades-long rivalry with the creation of the Wells Fargo Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) Cup...the series, which is in its fifth year, serves as an annual scorecard for the NCAA-sponsored athletic contests between the Lions and Waves, and challenges each institution to rise above the other within the West Coast Conference...any head-to-head competition, including matches in the post-season and tournaments throughout the year, will be counted toward the scoring and added to the scorecard as they occur...for the sports in which the two teams do not meet head-to-head, the teams will battle for points that will be awarded on the basis of overall finish at their respective post-season championships...the Lions currently lead the Waves this year, 2-0...Pepperdine has won the challenge in each of the first four seasons...to learn more about the PCH Cup and view the current scorecard, please visit: http://tinyurl.com/6n4l82s

LUFT LIFTS LIONS
Senior Kathleen Luft was named WCC Player of the Week on September 23 after guiding LMU to a 2-0 week, including victories over San Francisco and Santa Clara, to start West Coast Conference play...the selection is the second of her career after being honored on November 12 of last year...the native of Thousand Oaks, Calif. collected 35 kills over the two matches (4.38 per set) while hitting .380...she also posted a pair of aces in the match against Santa Clara, including one to force match point in the five-set victory over the Broncos...she then collected the match-winner as part of her season-high 23 kill performance on Saturday...Luft collected 12 kills with just two errors on 25 swings (.400) in a sweep of San Francisco before notching the 23 kills with just three errors on 54 attacks (.370) against Santa Clara...she finished the week with eight total blocks, including three block assists against San Francisco and five more against the Broncos...following her selection, Luft was interviewed by the WCC on TheW.tv...to view that interview, please visit: http://bit.ly/180R5lJ

TEXAS TWOSOME
A pair of Lions earned All-Tournament honors at the conclusion of the UTSA Classic, as junior Litara Keil and sophomore Hannah Tedrow each were lauded...Keil collected 38 kills in just two matches played at the tournament, averaging 4.75 kills per set...the native of Long Beach, Calif. had 18 kills on 45 swings for a .289 hitting percentage against Texas A&M before notching 20 more on 42 swings (.333) against host UTSA...she hit .310 over the course of the two matches...Tedrow dished-out 117 assists in three matches played, averaging 11.70 assists per set...active on the attack in her own right, she collected eight kills on 16 attacks...the native of Foothill Ranch, Calif. also managed a block solo and three block assists...for Tedrow, the All-Tournament selection was the first of her career, while Keil has earned one All-Tournament selection in each of her first three years at LMU...

DOUBLETREE ALL-TOURNEY
LMU seniors Kathleen Luft and Betsi Metter earned All-Tournament honors at the conclusion of the DoubleTree Los Angeles Westside Invitational... Luft led the Lions in kills per set at 3.57, collecting 25 in seven sets played...Metter was outstanding from the service area throughout the tournament, posting a tournament-high 14 aces, including six in the season-opener against Albany...UCLA's Karsta Lowe was named Tournament MVP after log gin a tournament-best 52 kills at a rate of 5.20 per set...fellow Bruin, Kelly Reeves, also earned an All-Tournament nod...North Texas' Courtney Windham was the lone Mean Green selection, earning the distinction after leading all players in blocks...the senior had three block solos and nine block assists to average 1.33 blocks per set...Albany's Amanda Dolan took home All-Tournament honors for the Great Danes, posting 17 kills with only five errors on 49 swings for a .245 hitting percentage, good for eighth at the tournament...UCLA won the DoubleTree Los Angeles Westside Invitational with a 3-0 record, followed by LMU at 2-1, North Texas at 1-2 and Albany at 0-3...

GET OFF ON THE RIGHT PAW
The Lions have had a knack for coming out of the gates strong in recent memory, having won 15 of their last 17 season-openers, including a sweep of North Texas to open the 2013 season...the only losses over that span came in 2007 to St. John's and then-No. 10 USC in 2010...LMU has recorded nine sweeps and won in four sets on five occasions...

PICKED BEFORE THE SERVE
Senior Kathleen Luft was the lone Lion named to the 2013 WCC Preseason All-Conference team...Luft collected a WCC-best 474 kills at a rate of 4.16 per set last season en route to a first team All-WCC selection...in WCC matches alone, Luft posted 254 kills at a rate of 4.31 per set...

THE SURVEY SAYS
According to the 10 West Coast Conference head coaches, the LMU women's volleyball team is tabbed to finish fifth in the WCC this year...the BYU women's volleyball team, which opened the season with a #13 ranking according to the AVCA, was chosen to win the 2013 West Coast Conference title...

ALL-CONFERENCE RETURNERS
In addition to Kathleen Luft on the All-Conference first team last year, Betsi Metter and Litara Keil also received honorable mention selections...Metter allso claimed her second consecutive WCC Defensive Player of the Year honor...Hannah Tedrow rounded out the Lions lauded, earning a spot on the All-Freshman team...Metter finished the regular season ranked second in the WCC in digs (511 - 4.60 per set) and third in aces (39 - .35 per set)...Keil finished the regular season ranked seventh in the WCC in blocks (115 - 1.04 per set) and 10th in attack percentage (.314), aces (34 - .31 per set) and kills (347 - 3.13 per set)...Tedrow finished the year ranked sixth in the WCC in assists with 1,045 at a rate of 9.41 per set...

U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A
After completing his third year serving as LMU head volleyball coach last season, Tom Black accepted an assistant coach position under head coach Karch Kiraly with the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team...Black will continue in his head coach role at LMU while serving on the Team USA staff for the first two years of the Olympic quadrennial before taking a sabbatical at LMU for the 2015 season...Black spent last the last three summers as a consultant coach for the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team as the squad prepared for the 2012 London Games...
