Max Miyahara will begin his fifth season with the women's water polo team, joining the aquatics program in January of 2001. During his tenure in assisting Head Coach John Loughran with the water polo programs at LMU, the women's water polo team has won a conference title in every season he has been with the team and the men's water polo team has won three in his four seasons.
As one of the up-and-coming assistants in the water polo industry, Miyahara has become an important piece in the successful tradition at LMU. Miyahara has helped Loughran recruit and develop 10 All-Americans the last four seasons. In addition, he has helped 33 student-athletes to National Scholar-Athlete honors since 2001.
As an undergrad at Queens College in Flushing, NY, Miyahara helped start the school's first varsity women's water polo team while he captained the men's team.
Following graduation, Miyahara landed a job as the head girls' water polo coach at Esperanza High School in Anaheim, CA. In addition to coaching the girls' team, Miyahara served as the assistant varsity boys' water polo and swim coach. He also served as the head JV boys' water polo coach.
Miyahara's record at Esperanza H.S. is impressive. During the 1998-99 season, Miyahara led the girl's water polo team to a 22-4 record, reaching the semifinals of the CIF Division 1 playoffs. That season Miyahara was named Sunset League Coach of the Year as he guided the girl's team to its first league championship.
