LOS ANGELES -- For just the fourth time in program history and for the first time in seven years, eighth-ranked LMU posted a shutout, defeating 18th-ranked Cal Baptist 11-0 to open the 2013 season at the LMU Opening Weekend Showcase at Burns Aquatics Center Saturday morning.
Freshman Claire Wright made seven saves and eight different Lions scored, including four newcomers, as the Lions won their fifth straight season opener. It was the first shutout since the Lions blanked CSU Bakersfield on Apr. 10, 2005. They also shutout the Roadrunners on April 26, 2003 and Champan on Mar. 7, 1998.
"Claire was a presence and moved great in goal for us," said Head Coach Kyle Witt. "Our press was strong and kept them off balance and we only gave up 5 kick outs on the day. In response, our man-down defense looked pretty good."
While the newcomers had a huge role in the win, it was the returners that got the offense going. Sophomore Mackenzie Beck scored the first two goals of the game for a 2-0 lead after one quarter. The Lions then led 4-0 at the half after goals from senior Jessica Morelos and junior Alexandra Honny.
"We had a lot of different players scoring on offense and that will be the key to our success this year," said Witt. "However, we missed 17 shots and lots of those were our fault, so that needs to get cleaned up. I am happy with our depth and we played about 14 field players and I felt very comfortable about that."
The Lions will travel to the UC Santa Barbara Winer Invitational on Jan. 25-27, opening with fifth-ranked Arizona State on Friday at 6 p.m. They will then face Azusa Pacific (11:50 am) and Santa Clara (4:50 pm) on Saturday, followed by Pacific (8 am) and top-ranked and two-time defending national champion Stanford (12:40 pm) on Sunday.
