Lions Beat No. 23 Marist, Finish 1-2 in Hawaii

HONOLULU, Hawaii - Loyola Marymount's challenging schedule to open the 2018 season continued this weekend in University of Hawaii's Rainbow Invite. The Lions (1-4) played two games Saturday and one on Sunday to finish the tournament with a win over No. 23 Marist and losses at No. 6 Hawaii and against No. 4 California.

 

Game 1: No. 22 LMU 12, No. 23 Marist 7 | Box Score 

After Marist scored first, LMU answered with six consecutive goals before the Red Foxes closed the second quarter with a power play goal to make it a 6-2 game at the half. The Lions responded with the first four goals of the third period, and outscored Marist 5-2 overall in the third.

LMU's 12 goals are a season-high and were led by the four from Hana Vilanova, three from Abbey Grosse, and two from Katie Hungerford. Kiana Harpstrite, Morgan Molloy, and Ari St. Oegger each added one in the win.

Claire Wright recorded six saves in her 32 minutes in the cage.

 

Game 2: No. 6 Hawaii 13, No. 22 LMU 6 | Box Score

Hawaii scored all four goals in the first quarter to put the Lions in an early hole. Hana Vilanova and Abbey Grosse answered with the first two of the second before the Warriors added one just before the half. 


 

 

Vilanova scored her second in the third quarter and Morgan Molloy followed with her first of the game off the assist from Daniella Hernandez. 

The next six goals all went for the home team before Molloy added her second midway through the fourth. Abbey Grosse scored late to make it a 13-6 final. 

Sky Flores made three saves as LMU's goalkeeper.

 

Game 3: No. 4 California 12, No. 22 LMU 2 | Box Score

Hana Vilanova scored a pair of first half goals, but the strength of the Golden Bears was too much. After Cal outscored LMU 6-2 in the first half, the national power scored all six goals in the second half to take the game, 12-2.

Claire Wright was back in goal, totaling a season-high 10 saves.

The Lions will play next at the single-day CBU Mini Tournament on Jan. 27 against Claremont at 9 a.m. and Chapman at 3:15 p.m.
