SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The first two weeks of the college water polo season has been an active one for senior Mackenzie Beck. The senior captain, already with a game winner in her pocket from the opening weekend, got another one on Sunday, lifting LMU to a sweep in the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invitational.

Beck scored with 1:49 left on the fourth overtime - the second sudden-death overtime session - to lift the 16th-ranked Lions to a 10-9 win over host and 14th-ranked UCSB in the final game at Campus Pool Sunday afternoon. The Lions opened the day with a 12-6 win over Sonoma State to go 4-0 at the Invitational and improve to 5-1 on the season.

"I would say that we are a pretty tough team," said Head Coach Kyle Witt. "One of our strengths is our toughness. We have to understand who we are and be consistent with that. We calmly did our job this weekend. The biggest thing is we got better every game and on top of that we came out 4-0. I'll take that."

The Lions won for the third time in six games by one goal, relying on the calmness of their upperclassmen leaders. Beck scored five goals in the overtime win and fellow senior Laura Lopez had a pair against the Gauchos. Junior Ivana Castro had five goals in the two games, leading the Lions with three against the Seawolves.

"Beck scored the game winner again and she is really good of being calm in those situations," said Witt. "And her teammates fed off that and really did a good job of getting her the ball where she can score. She is being helped in scoring those big goals and she has capitalized."

The Lions are off until they travel to the UC San Diego Triton Invitational on Feb. 7-8.
