La Jolla, CA - The 11th-ranked Loyola Marymount women's water polo opened the 2009 season with a pair of wins at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational in La Jolla, CA. The Lions opened with a 14-6 win over Cal Baptist and then knocked off No. 15 Long Beach State in overtime, 9-8.
Senior Nicole Hughes started her run at the all-time LMU scoring record with nine goals in the Lions opening two games, including the game winner against the 49ers with 41 seconds left in sudden death overtime on Saturday afternoon.
The Lions led the 49ers 6-3 at the break but saw Long Beach State tie at 6-6 after three periods. Hughes and junior transfer Anne Scott gave the Lions an 8-6 lead with 4:31 to play in regulation. Long Beach State scored the final two goals of the fourth frame, including a five-meter penalty shot with 1:22 to play to tie it at 8-8.
Neither team could score in the first two overtime periods, sending it to sudden death to set up Hughes' game winner. She had four goals against the 49ers while adding five against Cal Baptist.
Against the Lancers, the Lions led 10-4 at the half as Scott opened her LMU career with five goals in the two games, including three in the game against Cal Baptist.
The Lions advance to the championship bracket of the Triton Invitational and will face former Western Water Polo Association rival No. 9 UC Davis in the semifinals at 10:30 a.m. The Aggies, who won the WWPA over LMU last April, have moved to the new Big West conference.
