Lions Split In Tough Opener
Women's water polo falls to No. 4 Cal, beats No. 15 CSUN.

IRVINE, Calif. -- LMU women's water polo earned a split in the opening day of the 2013 UC Irvine Invitational, falling to fourth-ranked Cal in the opener, 9-5, and then recovering for an impressive 12-7 win over 15th-ranked Cal State Northridge.
LMU goes to 7-5 on the season and will face ninth-ranked San Jose State in game 17 at 8 am at Corona del Mar High School. UC Santa Barbara and UC Davis play in the other half of that bracket and the winners will play at 1:30 p.m. The losers at 2:45 p.m.
In the opener, the Bears took a 4-1 lead after one and 6-2 at the break. The Lions held Cal to just one goal in the fourth quarter but got no closer.
Five different Lions scored in the first contest to continue their balance on the season.
Game two same the Lions take a 5-3 and never trail the rest of the way as their offense pulled away. They led 7-4 at the break and outscored the Matadors in every quarter. Senior Jessica Morelos led all scorers with four. Freshman Danielle Jonson had three and sophomore Mackenzie Beck had a pair.
