Another One-Goal Setback

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 17th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team defeated 10th-ranked Loyola Marymount 5-4 on Friday afternoon at Canyonview Pool. LMU had won the previous 15 meetings against the Tritons, dating back to the 2000 season.

UCSD trailed 3-1 at halftime, but got back in the game with two unanswered goals in the third period. LMU took the lead in the fourth, before Sarah Bajorek scored at the 3:20 and :46 marks to give the Tritons the win. UCSD improves to 5-6, while the Lions drop to 8-4. The Tritons are back in action on Saturday when it takes on No. 1 Stanford at noon in on the UCSD campus.

UCSD scored quickly in the first as Natalie Hockett scored at the 7:27 mark. LMU's Nicole Hughes scored on a 6-on-5, tying the game and Katie Hicks put LMU on top 2-1 at the 4:34 mark.

In the second quarter, Hughes scored the only goal of the frame at the 4:28 mark as LMU led 3-1 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Hockett scored her second goal of the game, bringing UCSD within 3-2. Lauren Woods then connected on a 6-on-5, with 4:44 remaining, tyijng the game at 3-3 through three quarters.

LMU regained the lead in the fourth quarter as Hicks netted a goal on a 6-on-5. On the very next possession, UCSD's Bajorek returned the favor with a tying 6-on-5 goal at the 3:20 mark. Each team had a 6-on-5 late, with UCSD connecting on its with :46 left on a strike by Bajorek.
