No. 11 Lions Drops No. 12 UCSB, 9-7
Lions improve to 18-5 on the season with win over UCSB.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - No. 11 Loyola Marymount outscored No. 12 UC Santa Barbara for most of Wednesday afternoon's match at UCSB's Campus Pool to earn the 9-7 win. Senior Stacia Peterson led all scorers with four goals as the Lions improve to 18-5 with the victory while the Gauchos fall to 13-14.
UCSB scored the first goal of the game with 6:30 remaining in the first quarter to give them a 1-0 lead. However, LMU sophomore driver Nicole Hughes had Loyola Marymount's first goal to tie the score at one. The Lions scored the last goal of the first period off a look from senior utility Cara Colton, brining the score to 2-1 in favor of LMU.
UCSB tied the game at 2-2 before LMU capitalized on a six-on-five opportunity with a goal from senior two-meter Dora Szabolcsi. UCSB wouldn't go away and evened the game at 3-3 with a power-play goal of their own.
With 20 seconds remaining before intermission, LMU senior utility Katie Hicks scored off a shot that floated into the cage to give the Lions a 4-3 lead heading into the break.
Loyola Marymount scored the first goal of the second half when senior utility Stacia Peterson went around Gonzales to put one through, increasing LMU's lead to two, 5-3
After UCSB's goal two minutes into the third period, superb defense on both ends of the pool kept either team from scoring until there was 1:40 left to play. LMU sophomore driver Nicole Hughes's shot went through UCSB's block to bring the score to 6-4 in favor of the Lions.
LMU followed that up with a goal that went into the left corner of the cage to extended its lead to three at the end of three periods of play, 7-4. The Gauchos made it 7-5 but just 19 seconds later with a goal from Peterson to bring the score to 8-5. The Gauchos scored again with 5:13 left in regulation with a skip shot from well beyond the five-meter mark.
The Lions converted on another six-on-five opportunity to extend their lead to three again with a skip shot from Peterson. The Lions got 12 saves from goalie Kaylee Caster in the win.
The Lions will next host the 2007 LMU Invitational on Friday and Saturday, April 13-14.
