Lions Reach 20 Wins for Ninth Straight Year
Women's water polo splits final day at Bronco Invitational.

Santa Clara, CA - With their 11-6 win over Sonoma State, LMU women's water polo earned their 20th win of the season, the ninth straight year they have had at least 20 wins. The win was the first of two games for the Lions in the final day of the Bronco Invitational on Sunday. The Lions lost their final game to No. 6 San Jose State, 7-4.
In the opener, Anne Scott and Nicole Hughes combined to score eight of the 11 goals for the Lions, putting in four each. The win moved the Lions record against Western Water Polo Association foes to 9-0 on the year. In the final game, the Lions held a 4-3 lead at the end of three quarters but saw the sixth-ranked Spartans score four unanswered to pull off the comeback.
With the split, the Lions are 20-7 on the season.
Against Sonoma State, the game was tied at 1-1. LMU then scored the next three goals - one by Hughes, Mary Ann Campos and Casey Flacks - to go up 4-1 with 1:51 to play in the quarter. Sonoma State, who cut the lead to 4-2 with 34 second left, never got closer than two the rest of the way.
LMU scored the next to goals to go up 6-2 and led 6-3 at the break. Hughes then scored the first goal of the second half to go up 7-3. After Somona State answered, Diana Romero made it 8-4.
Sonoma State would answer one more time before LMU scored three straight to make it 11-5. The Seawolves scored with 26 seconds to play in the fourth quarter for the final margin.
After a busy week with five games, the Lions will return to southern California for a single game, traveling to La Jolla, Calif., to take on UC San Diego on Thursday, April 9 at 6:00 p.m.
