LOS ANGELES -- The 11th-ranked LMU women's water polo saw their defense post five scoreless quarters to earn a pair of non-conference wins at the 2013 Bronco Invitational hosted by Santa Clara on Saturday.

The Lions opened with an 8-2 win over the host Broncos in the opener and then jumped out early for a 12-3 win over Cal State Monterey Bay in the second game. The Lions improve to 17-8 on the season.

Junior Alexandra Honny led a balanced offense with seven goals while freshman goalie Claire Wright had 17 saves in the two games.

In the first game of the day, a pair of first quarter goals gave Santa Clara a quick 2-0 lead.

After that, it was all LMU as the Lions shutout the Broncos the remaining three quarters and got balanced scoring for the win.

Laura Lopez, Mackenzie Beck and Danielle Johnson scored in the second quarter, the last coming by Beck with just 15 seconds left to give the Lions a 3-2 lead at the break. They would not trail again.

Beck and Jessica Morelos scored in the third for a 5-2 lead after three and then Honny scored three in the fourth quarter for the final margin.

In the Lions second game against the Otters, the defense posted another two scoreless quarters and this time got early offense to lead from start to finish. Wright finished with 12 saves and finished with five scoreless quarters on the day.

Honny, who scored the Lions last three goals in the first game, scored four of the LMU's six first quarter goals to set the pace for the win. Morgan Bonk and Ivana Castro scored a pair of goals each.

The Lions will wrap-up their four-game week with a visit to fifth-ranked Cal on Sunday at 11 a.m.
