Baker Dozen Comeback
April 9, 2006
Davis, CA (April 9) - For the second year in a row the Loyola Marymount women's water polo team completed the Davis Shootout perfect at 4-0. With it, the Lions also claimed for the second year in a row and the third time in program history a 13-game winning streak. The fourth-ranked Lions did it thanks to a big win over 14th-ranked UC Davis, 10-8, to conclude the 26th-annual Shootout Sunday evening. LMU improves to 22-3 on the season and goes to 9-0 in the Western Water Polo Association with the second win over the Aggies this season. The win puts LMU in the driver's seat for the top-seed in the upcoming WWPA Championship. The Lions, playing their sixth game in five days, trailed for the first two and half quarters as UC took a 4-2 lead after the first period and held a 5-4 lead at the break. LMU and sophomore Christine Robinson broke through to start the second half. Robinson tied it at 5-5 just 48 seconds into the second half. On the next possession the Aggies took the lead right back. LMU then scored the next three goals to take the lead for good. Sarah Hamilton tied the score at 6-6 with 3:17 remaining in the quarter and junior Cara Colton gave the Lions the lead with 2:02 remaining. Robinson made it 8-6 with 1:25 remaining on her second goal of the period. UC Davis cut the lead to 8-7 on an extra-attacker goal with 27 seconds remaining. Robinson then delivered the dagger, scoring with just one second left in the third frame to make it 9-7. Robinson finished with three goals, all in the Lions' five-goal third quarter. Junior Katie Hicks also finished the game with three goals, all in the first half. Rosanna Tomiuk then scored her second goal of the game just 50 seconds into the fourth quarter to give LMU a three-goal lead. LMU's defense and goalie Katie Murray held UC Davis without a goal in the final frame until there was just 44 seconds remaining when they scored to cut it to 10-8.
LMU returns home to the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center for a statement game against fifth-ranked Hawaii on Thursday, April 13 at 3 p.m.
