Alexandra Honny scored as the buzzer sounded at the end of regulation, sending the Lions match against No. 2 UCLA to overtime. The Bruins, however, would secure the 7-6 win thanks to a five-meter penalty shot in the final overtime frame at the Burns Aquatics Center on Sunday afternoon.
It was a defensive affair from start to finish as both goalies made impressive saves. The Lions Elise Ponce had eight saves while UCLA's Caitlin Dement had 12. In addition, both teams fought off 6-on-5 opportunities by the opponent, as both teams went 2-for-10 on the extra attack.
The Lions trailed 3-2 at the break, but outscored UCLA 3-1 in the third quarter, taking a 5-4 lead on Honny's goal with 42 seconds left in the frame.
The Bruins then scored the next two goals, both by Hannah Sebenaler, to take a 6-5 lead with 4:08 to play. Both teams fought off a 6-on-5 and the Lions took their final possession with just six seconds left in regulation.
Honny then loft a shot in the top-left corner that hit the back of the net as the buzzer sounded to send the game into extra frames.
Neither team would score in the first overtime quarter, including 6-on-5 chances for both teams.
UCLA would then get the game winner on Sarah Orozco's five-meter with 2:13 to play. The Lions would draw a five-meter penalty shot on a perfect play run to senior Kimberly Benedetii. However, the penalty shot hit the bottom of the cross bar and bounded out. UCLA was 1-for-3 on five-meters while the Lions were 1-for-2.
Honny led all scorers with four goals, giving her 61 on the season.
The Lions will end the regular season with a pair of home games, hosting Azusa Pacific on Thursday, Apr. 19 at 3 p.m., then hosting Senior Day on Saturday, Apr. 21 at 12 noon.
