Seniors Finish Home Play With Ranked Win

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The eighth-ranked LMU women's water polo team ended the 2011 season and the home career's of seven graduating student-athletes with a 10-8 win over 15th-ranked Cal State Northridge in the final home game of the season on Thursday at the Burns Aquatics Center.

Mary Ann Campos, Daisy Carrillo, Gina Castagnola, Katie Fletcher, Hana Gosney, Diana Romero and Katlin Sherrin played their final home game in the win, with all seven making a contribution in the game, including goals from Fletcher, Gosney and two from Carrillo.

The Lions were led by Casey Flacks three goals and nine saves from junior Elise Ponce. LMU improves to 24-8 on the year as they enter the WWPA Championships April 29-May 1 as the No. 1 seed.

Fletcher gave the Lions a 2-1 lead after the first period. After Heidi Pettinger cut the Lions lead to 5-4, Erin Manke then made the score 7-4 at the break with back-to-back goals.

Kimberly Benedetti then made it 8-4 with a goal at the 6:21 mark of the third period.

Cal State Northridge (21-14) , came back with three unanswered goals to cut the lead to 8-7, including Melissa Doll's goal with 1:15 to play in the quarter on a 6-on-5 attack.

Benedetti pushed the lead back to a pair, 9-7, with a goal with 4:25 left in the game. Flacks then iced it with a goal with 54 seconds left. Lindsay Nelson added a goal for the Matadors on the 6-on-5 with 23 seconds left. CSUN finished 4-for-5 on the 6-on-5 while LMU went 3-for-8.
