Seniors Push Lions to Win

LOS ANGELES -- LMU women's water polo used a second half defensive push to lead them to a 13-8 win over Long Beach State on Senior Day at the Burns Aquatics Center on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Lions head into the 2012 Western Water Polo Association Championships next weekend at 17-9 overall. The Lions recognized five seniors on the day - goalie Elise Ponce, Kimberly Benedetti, Casey Flacks, Aimee Goodwin and Whitney Delgado. All five got the start and all five made an impact Benedetti scored five goals to pace the Lions, while Delgado had two goals, Flacks had three assists and two steals, Ponce finished with 11 saves and Goodwin had a steal. The Lions sled 6-5 at the break in a game that featured 18 exclusions. The teams would trade goals to start the second half for the Lions to lead 7-6 with 6:31 to play. LMU would then score six of the game's eight remaining goals, including a 5-1 run to end the third and start the fourth quarters. Benedetti scored the Lions first four goals of the run to help the Lions pull away. The Lions head to La Jolla, Calif., and the UC San Diego campus for the 2012 WWPA Championships, which begin on Friday, April 27 and end on Sunday, April 29. The Lions will open the tournament on Friday at 6 p.m., playing the winner of the No. 8 vs. No. 9 game between Colorado State and Cal State San Bernardino.
