Sour Farewell After Rough Second Half

Los Alamitos, CA (May 13) - Six Loyola Marymount seniors had a sour farewell to their careers with the Lions as they fell to Hartwick in the fifth place game of the 2007 NCAA Women's Water Polo Championships 13-12 on Sunday afternoon at the Joint Forces Training Base. The Lions finish the season 27-7 while Hartwick improved to 31-10. The Lions built a 11-5 first half lead but managed to score just one goal to Hartwick's eight. The game winner for Hartwick came with 2:02 remaining as they outscored the Lions 8-1 in the second half. It was a rough contest as the team's combined for 30 ejections, 18 by Hartwick. Three players were ejected from the game for three fouls for Hartwick and two for the Lions. However, the Lions could not capitalize on the 6-on-5, going 5-for-5 in the first half but going 0-for-9 in the second half. "We had a great first half, but we just stopped shooting the ball and running our offense in the second half," said Head Coach John Loughran. "Our 6-on-5 was great to start the game but in the second half we just did not run it well." ` Senior Dora Szabolcsi led the Lions with four goals. Nicole Hughes added three and Stacia Peterson a pair. Senior Cara Colton also had two.
