LOS ANGELES -- With the 2013 season just two weeks away, Lions' All-Access continues its Inside the Lions look at the LMU women's water polo team as it prepares to defend its 2012 conference title. Up next is junior Kiara Cerda.
At the age of 11, the sport of water slowly helped this junior Biology major learn to "not drown" in the water and to "keep her head up". She is doing more than that now as she anchors an LMU squad who leads all teams at LMU in GPAs.
The walk-on has not only earned a spot on the roster, but has become one of its upper clansmen leaders in and out of the pool, earning the accolades to prove it. She has earned the college water polo coaches highest National All-Academic honor the last two seasons and claimed the NCAA Elite 89 Award at the 2012 NCAA Championships.
The Elite 89 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's championships.
As she continues to move toward the next stages of life, she says she owes it to her older sister for "taking her to the pool", to her father - a former football player at the University of Miami - for giving her the drive to excel, and to her teammates that makes "water polo one of the best experiences in life."
