LOS ANGELES -- The eighth-ranked LMU women's water polo team, and their 13 newcomers, got their first taste of college water polo last weekend. The young roster will now get their first taste of tournament action and the nation's best as they travel to the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invitational Jan. 25-27.
The Lions, who opened with an 11-0 win over No. 18 Cal Baptist last Saturday, will jump right into action with a fifth-ranked Arizona State on Friday, Jan. 24, at 6 p.m. Freshman goalie Claire Wright made seven saves in the shutout against Cal Baptist, earning KAP7 Co-WWPA Player of the Weeks honors from the Western Water Polo Association this week. It was just the fourth shutout in program history, the first since April of 2005. The Lions will then face Azusa Pacific (11:50 am) and Santa Clara (4:50 pm) on Saturday, followed by Pacific (8 am) and top-ranked and two-time defending national champion Stanford (12:40 pm) on Sunday. The date with the Broncos will be the first conference game of the season. The Lions won all 13 games against Western Water Polo Association foes in winning their ninth conference title in 2012.
