Los Angeles, CA -- Loyola Marymount women's water polo senior Nicole Hughes entered the season ranked fourth all-time with 191 career goals, 48 from tying the school record. After four games of the 2009 season, she is well on her way to that record. She scored 15 goals in four games to be named the Western Water Polo Association Player of the Week for Feb. 11, helping the Lions move to No. 9 in the nation in this week's national poll.

Hughes scored five goals in the wins over Cal Baptist and No. 15 Long Beach State in the first two games of the Triton Invitational last Saturday then added five more in the games against No. 9 UC Davis and No. 8 Michigan. The Lions finished in the third place with a 3-1 mark, moving them from No. 11 in the national polls to No. 9.

The Lions will test that ranking at No. 4 UCLA on Saturday, Feb. 14.

As for Hughes, she moved to No. 3 all-time in LMU history with 206 goals just four games into her final campaign. Former teammate Stacia Peterson is second with 227 and Lucy Windes is the all-time record holder with 239 goals.

The two five-goal games Saturday gave her eight games with five or more goals in her career, including an LMU record seven goals in the WWPA first round game against Cal State San Bernardino a year ago.

On the weekend Hughes added eight steals, 15 kickouts drawn and four assists.
