LOS ANGELES -- -- LMU women's water polo jumped back into the top-10 thanks to a fourth place finish at the Triton Invitational, facing four straight top-20 programs. They rank ninth heading into a bye week of competition.
Senior Alexandra Honny paced the Lions last weekend to earn the Golden Coast Conference Player of the Week honor for Feb. 12. The Lions leading scorer the last two seasons was at it again, scoring 11 goals with three assists, 10 kick-outs drawn, 10 steals and a field block.
She scored three goals in the 10-7 win over No. 16 UC Santa Barbara and then tallied her one goal with less than five seconds left to send the game against host and No. 6 UC San Diego into overtime. Sophomore Danielle Johnson would score in the first overtime to lift the Lions to the 7-6 win.
Honny would add three goals in the semifinals against No. 5 UC Irvine and then four more against No. 10 Arizona State.
The Riverside, Calif., native leads the GCC with 22 goals in eight games this season, giving her 229 in her career. She also has 90 career assists and 207 career steals, chipping in seven and 18 so far this season.
Her career numbers at LMU now ranked third all-time in goals, fourth in assists and fourth in steals.
