February Student-Athletes of the Month Named
March 14, 2006 Los Angeles, CA (Mar. 14, 2006) -- Loyola Marymount University junior guard Brandon Worthy and junior goalie Rachel Riddell were named the LMU/Enterprise Rent-A-Car Student-Athletes of the Month for March. Worthy led the LMU men's basketball team to it first West Coast Conference Tournament championship game since 1989 while Riddell led the fourth-ranked Lions to a 7-1 start. After the first month of play, the 2005 All-American Riddell came out of the gates as one of the best goalies in the nation. She led the nation with 12.5 saves per game while ranking third in total saves with 96. She has helped the Lions rank third in the nation with a goals against average of just 4.0. She has made 12 or more saves five times in helping the Lions to a 7-1 record in the month of February, equaling the best start in program history. All eight games have come against top-20 opponents. She had an amazing 18 saves in a 7-1 win over sixth-ranked Cal to give the Lions fifth place in the Gaucho Invitational to end the month. The tournament featured the nation's top 15 teams. As for Worthy, he averaged 19.4 points in the month of February, leading the Lions to the number two seed in the WCC tournament and first-team All-WCC honors. Of the seven games, Worthy scored 20 ore more points four times, including 27 against Saint Mary's to close the month. He also averaged 4.1 points, 5.6 assists and 2.4 steals during the month. In the win over Pepperdine, he went 15-for-21 from the free throw line, the second most attempts in school history. Each month during the academic calendar, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C.) will chose a male and female Enterprise Rent - A - Car student-athlete of the month whose performance best represents the traditions of Loyola Marymount University. Other student-athletes nominated this month were Ashley Dunlap (women's basketball), Hillaree Bennett (softball), Pavla Mesterova (women's tennis), Lauren Mathewson (swimming), Reyniere Roxas (men's tennis), Brad Meyers (baseball) and Josh Escobedo (men's golf).
