LOS ANGELES -The final numbers of the four-year career of senior Alexandra Honny have yet to be finalized, but her name within the record book of the LMU women's water polo program will be all over it. On Tuesday, she added her name to an already impressive list, earning the Golden Coast Conference Player of the Year honor as the league announced it inaugural class of All-Conference awards for 2014.
Honny becomes the 11th Lion since 2001 to claim the top honor in the conference as Player of the Year. And her numbers show why. Honny, who is just the second Lion in program history to tally more than 200 goals in her career, enters the 2014 GCC Championships leading the league with 74 goals and 79 steals this season.
The 74 goals is fifth all-time in LMU history for a single season and the 79 steals is also fifth. In terms of her career, she became the all-time steals leader in program history with 268 and with 281 goals, she is second to only Nicole Hughes, who had 320 from 2006-09.
Honny also earns her third straight first-team All-Conference honor. She is the only player in program history to do it three straight seasons. Joining her as a first-team All-GCC selection was sophomore Ivana Castro. It was a break-out season for the second-year Lion from Commerce, scoring 43 goals with 24 assist and 32 steals.
Earning second-team All-GCC was sophomore goalie Claire Wright. She enters the 2014 GCC Championships with 247 saves, allowing just 210 goals in 101 quarters on the season.
Rounding out the honors for the Lions, junior Mackenzie Beck was named Honorable Mention All-GCC. She was fourth on the team with 40 goals, adding 22 assist and 44 steals, ranked second on the team.
The Lions take on Fresno Pacific in the first round of the GCC Championships, which will be hosted by the Lions at the Burns Aquatics Center starting on Thursday, April 24 and running through Saturday, April 26. The Lions will play at 1:30 pm on Thursday.
