Water Polo and Tennis Take Home Athlete of the Month Honors

Los Angeles, CA (May 6, 2004) -- Senior Devon Wright from the Loyola Marymount women's water polo team and freshman Nico Terrien from the men's tennis program were named the LMU/Enterprise Rent-A-Car Student-Athlete of the Month for leading their respective teams to high levels of success in the month of April.

On a team dominated by underclassmen, Terrien had one of the best seasons as a freshman in program history. In his first season, Terrien helped the men's tennis team earn their highest finish in conference history with a third place finish at the West Coast Conference Championships on April 25.

Terrien, the WCC Freshman of the Year, finished the month of April with a perfect 7-0 mark at the No. 2 singles slot, including wins over Saint Mary's, UC Riverside, Idaho, Portland, San Francisco, and Santa Clara. The Nantes, France native finished the season 27-8 overall, and 17-0 at No. 2 singles en route to earning first-team All-WCC honors at this season's WCC Championships. His efforts in April also earned him the WCC's Player of the Month honors, the first for LMU men's tennis this season. He also led the Lions to their first national team ranking in program history this season, checking in at No. 75 in the ITA rankings on March 16.

For Wright, success has been the norm for her and the women's water polo team. The second-year junior college transfer will finish her career this weekend at the NCAA Women's Water Polo Championships. Wright led the Lions to their fourth straight Western Water Polo Association title in April, defeating UC San Diego 7-3 in the WWPA title game at LMU. For her efforts on the season, Wright was named WWPA Player of the Year as she finished the month of April with 15 goals, eight kickouts drawn and four steals.

In the WWPA tournament, she had a team-high seven goals, including two in the title game and four in the semifinals against Cal State Bakersfield. Of her eight kickouts in the month, six led to advantage goals for the Lions. Wright earned her second WWPA All-Conference selection as the Lions make their fourth straight trip to the NCAAs and have an impressive 92-29 (.760) record in that span.

Each month during the academic calendar, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C.) will chose a male and female Enterprise Rent - A - Car student-athlete of the month whose performance best represents the traditions of Loyola Marymount University. Also nominated this month were Stephen Kahn (baseball), Chaz Inouye (men's golf), Danielle Kaminaka (softball), Patrycia Hubl (women's tennis), Varsity 8 (women's crew).
