LOS ANGELES, Calif. -
This last Friday, February 6th, LMU student-athletes helped to put on the New Horizons' Prom dinner and dance. New Horizons, an organization located in the San Fernando Valley, helps developmentally handicapped adults lead normal and successful lives. In addition to helping developmentally handicapped adults get jobs in the outside community, New Horizons also provides job opportunities through their on-site workshop and self-run eatery, Sam's Cafe. Most importantly New Horizons advocates for compassion, kindness and success for their clients in the community, and within the New Horizons support groups.
The dinner and dance prom night, which was part of New Horizons' social calendar for their clients, was a huge success, as over 200 clients came out for the festivities. The prom was held at New Horizons' Sam's cafe banquet room, which was decorated from top to bottom in a purple and gold masquerade theme. The clients enjoyed food, music, dancing and their very own prom pictures under a floral arch.
The LMU student-athletes who volunteered helped to run the event by serving the three course meal, dancing, tearing down the decorations following the dance, and clean up. In addition, the LMU volunteers brought a feeling of enthusiasm and jovial energy to the dance floor, and the New Horizons clients loved the encouragement and attention. Dancing the night away, both the LMU student-athletes and clients made unexpected friendships and enjoyed a festive evening.
